At least seven people have been killed and nine are missing after a shopping centre collapsed on construction workers in horrifying scenes in Mexico.

Dramatic images showed emergency workers hauling victims from the rubble as they desperately searched for survivors in Nuevo Leon on Thursday.

Seven people were confirmed dead and another 15 were injured after the structure came crashing down over their heads, authorities said. All of those injured and killed are believed to be construction workers.

Work on the three-story structure in the industrial hub was being carried out without the necessary licence, authorities said as they issued an update.

The civil defence said nine people remained missing on Thursday night.

The tragedy comes after a newly opened shopping centre on the south side of Mexico City partially collapsed in July.

A support beam at the Artz Pedregal centre failed, allowing operators to evacuate the centre so that no one was injured when the top floors collapsed about five minutes later.

Parts of the centre had still been under construction even though it opened in March.
