A newborn baby has been found buried alive in a village in India.

The baby, thought to be between four and six hours old, was reportedly spotted in a field by a passing schoolgirl who saw her feet moving above the earth.

Villagers dug her out and, finding she was still breathing, passed her over to a community health activist.

“She is doing fine and all her parameters are normal,” said Fanindra Kumar Panigrahi, district chief medical officer.

Police are trying to track down the baby’s parents.

They suspect the newborn was either abandoned by her parents because of her gender or the mother had been an unmarried woman.

The baby was found in the village of Anjira, in Odisha state.
