A New York taxi with a mattress wedged in the back is being advertised for £46 per night on holiday lettings website Airbnb.

The vehicle has been "renovated into a swanky living quarters" and boasts "beautiful views" and a prime location just three minutes from Manhattan, according to the owner.

And the lack of toilet or electricity has not stopped dozens of people booking for up to a week's stay.

The owner, a New Yorker called Jonathan, writes in the Airbnb listing: "It was in service since 2002 driving New Yorkers up and down the busy Manhattan streets!

"From actors to real estate tycoons, the cab drove thousands of people around the bustling streets.

"Now for the first time its parked. Don’t worry the meter is not running."

The vehicle is furnished with "a comfortable bed, soft pillows, sheets, and a portable wireless air-conditioner", the advert adds.

It remains parked on a street corner in Queens and is said to be near to public toilets.

The "hotel" has been met with a mixed response from guests, with some hailing the unique experience while others complained about noisy passing cars and "stuffy" conditions.

One reviewer said: "The van was definitely an experience. Not being able to shower was definitely a negative seeing as New York City isn't very clean so you get dirty easily.

"The space was cramped but enough to put our luggage and have some leg room.

"The bed is comfortable and cozy. If you don't mind feeling dirty for a few days and need to save money, then this is for you."
