One person has died and six more are injured after a minivan ploughed into pedestrians on a busy street in New York, police have said.

The vehicle reportedly mounted the curb before crashing into people in Chinatown, Manhattan, on Monday night.

Of the six injured in the collision, in Canal Street, one remained in critical condition in hospital following the incident that unfolded shortly before 7pm (local time).

Police told local media the driver lost control of the van while attempting to parallel park.

New York Police Department were advising people to avoid the area or expect heavy delays on surrounding roads.

In a statement on Twitter, the force said: “Due to a vehicle collision in the vicinity of Forsyth St & Canal St in Manhattan, please avoid the area until further notice and expect heavy delays.”

Police said the injured pedestrians were taken to hospital, including one in a critical condition.

The exact circumstances are being investigated. Officers said the driver remained at the scene in the hours following the crash.
