Balancing act: the two were rescued by firefighters

Two window cleaners were rescued from the 69th storey of the 1 World Trade Centre building in New York today.

Firefighters were called to the south side of the newly-opened skyscraper in the early afternoon US time.

They cut glass windows on the building to free the men after they became trapped on scaffolding dangling hundreds of feet above street level.

The fire department says the workers were tethered and communicating with rescuers during their ordeal.

The scaffolding was dangling at a 45-degree angle alongside the skyscraper's glassy facade, a witness told Reuters.

Authorities said the pair became stuck when a cable on the building broke.

The building, in lower Manhattan, is the tallest in the US.

A cable on the scaffolding apparently broke about 1pm (6pm GMT).

The workmen were then pulled inside the building at around 2:15pm (7.15pm GMT).

The building opened on November 3 after years in construction in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks.
