Football legend Pele has been admitted to a special hospital unit after a reaction to recent surgery.

The 74-year-old Brazil icon was taken to hospital in Sao Paulo for the second time in a month on Monday.

He is believed to have contracted a urinary infection after surgery to remove kidney stones on November 13.

The Albert Einstein Hospital today confirmed he is in a special care unit due to a worsening of his condition.

A spokesman said: "Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) remains in hospital.

"To receive the best care he was transferred in order to be monitored in a special care unit."

Jose Fornos Rodrigues, the former player's personal aide, said Pele was "completely fine" and the move was primarily to protect his privacy.

"He was uncomfortable with so many people coming. It'll be quieter now," Rodrigues said.

Pele secured his place as one of the greatest footballers of all time after guiding Brazil to three world cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

The striker made 92 appearances and scored 77 goals for his national team.
