Paris police are investigating a possible attempt to blow up a cement truck belonging to a construction company alleged to have struck deals with extremists in Syria.

A homemade petrol bomb was found under a mixer at a factory in the north-east of the French capital on Thursday morning.

Workers discovered six petrol containers attached to a "crude detonator device" under a mixer at a cement works owned by LafargeHolcim.

Police have cordoned off the area in the 19th arrondissement. They said nothing exploded, no one was hurt, and it was too early to say if the device was functional.

"Workers discovered the containers as they went to work this morning," a source told AFP.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into attempted destruction of property by fire but no arrests have been made.

The case has not been handed to counter-terrorism detectives.

It comes days after four gas cylinders soaked in petrol were found close to the Paris St-Germain's Parc des Princes football stadium.

Police arrested five people, including a terror suspect who was meant to be under surveillance, in the 16th arrondissement before the team's home game.

Swiss-French cement giant LafargeHolcim declined to comment on the discovery of the latest device.

The firm is under investigation over claims it indirectly funded Isis by paying armed groups in Syria to ensure the safety of employees and keep a factory in the country open.

The company apologised for the "unacceptable" practice earlier this year.
