A large pig was apprehended by police after causing chaos on a New Zealand motorway.

The animal was spotted by rush hour motorists wandering around on the Northwestern Motorway near Auckland, causing serious tailbacks.

It is believed to have fallen out of a truck, suffering injuries in the process.

Two members of the public reportedly cornered the brown pig and managed to restrain it before police arrived and detained it.

Tracey Moore, of the Animal Management department at Auckland Council, said the pig was taken to a nearby animal shelter after about 40 minutes.

"The pig has a few scrapes, and is a bit frightened. It is now sitting in the paddock at the shelter, and we have given it water and an orange to eat," she said.

"We have not yet had any contact from a potential owner, who may not even be aware the pig is missing."
