Senior Russian officials accused Theresa May of “making a fool of herself” during a speech in which she accused Moscow of meddling in elections.
The response came after the Prime Minister on Monday accused Russia of “planting fake stories” in the media to “sow discord in the West”.
Russian senators accused Mrs May of "making a fool of herself" with a "counterproductive" speech, according to the BBC.
The Russian Embassay in the UK also hit back at her criticism on Twitter with a bizarre message about drinking red wine.
It wrote: “#UK Prime Minister @theresa_may on @Russia: ‘We know what you are doing’. We know what YOU are doing as well. Dear Theresa, we hope, one day you will try Crimean #Massandra red wine.”
Mrs May's comments came at the Lord Mayor's Banquet at London's Guildhall on Monday.
She said the nation was “threatening the international order”, and warned that the UK would “do what is necessary to protect ourselves”.
Mrs May said a "comprehensive new economic partnership" with the European Union will "underpin" that "shared commitment" as Moscow seeks to undermine Western values.
