Singer flees attack by machete gang

Attack: Hip hop singer Sister Fa

A hip hop singer narrowly escaped being attacked in a Senegalese school as she tried to teach children about the dangers of female genital mutilation.

Sister Fa, 32, herself a victim of FGM, was touring schools in her home country to raise awareness about the dangers of the procedure when she was confronted by about 30 protesters in the village of Aere Lao.

She invited the protesters in to debate the issue, but when one of the protesters grabbed her arm she was advised to leave.

She was later told that 100 men and women armed with machetes, clubs and stones, had gathered outside the school.

She pledged to continue campaigning to stop FGM and for the Senegalese government to include it on the school curriculum.

During her seven date “Education Sans Excision” tour in May she held classes about human rights and FGM and played free gigs.

The tour to a remote area of the west African country was funded by London-based charity the Orchid Project and has been featured in the Evening Standard.
