At least two people died after an elevated bike lane built ahead of the Olympics in Rio collapsed on to a beach.

An investigation is under way into what caused a 150ft stretch of the Tim Maia Bike Path to collapse on Thursday but authorities said it appeared to have been struck by a strong wave.

Rio Municipal Secretary Pedro Paulo Carvalho said a third person was still missing but declined to answer questions about whether workmanship may have been to blame for the accident.

Ambulances were dispatched to the scene and helicopters hovered over the beach on Thursday, which was a public holiday in Brazil.

An Associated Press photographer at the scene saw two bodies laid out on the Sao Conrado beach.

A woman thought to be the wife of one of the victims knelt over his body, kissing his face and begging for another moment to say goodbye.

The two dead have not been named, but Diego Goncalves Fernandes, a beach vendor who saw the bodies floating in the water before they were fished out by a helicopter, said both were men.

Rio de Janeiro is hosting the Olympics from August, and the bike lane is among the Games' legacy projects.

No Olympic event will be held on the 2.5-mile bike path, which links the beachfront areas of Sao Conrado and Leblon, but the tragedy has added to concerns about Brazil's readiness to host the Games.
