An Air Force base in Ohio has confirmed that earlier reports of an active shooter were "false".

The base said that there was "no real active shooter incident" hours after authorities responded to reports of a shooter.

Security forces and other emergency responders rushed to the hospital at the base following claims there was an "active shooter."

The incident was recported during a "normal, scheduled installation exercise" that included an active shooter scenario.

A statement from Wright-Patterson AFB said: "Upon investigation, it was determined that the incident at the MTF was not an actual Active Shooter incident.

"An unknown individual called 911 believing that there was a real-world incident occurring within the base hospital."

Video from the scene showed people exiting the area with their hands in the air.

The base has around 27,000 civilian employees and military personnel.
