VIDEO: Pope Francis swears in front of crowd during botched Vatican address

Faux pas: Pope Francis accidentally swore at the audience

The Pope made an almighty mess of an address at the Vatican when he blurted out the equivalent of the f-word by mistake.

Instead of saying "in questo caso" - meaning "in this case" - Pope Francis, an Argentinian whose first language is Spanish, said "cazzo", which means d*** or c*** and is used in the same way the f-word is used in the UK.

Catholics around the world who understood Italian listened in shock as gave the address, with the footage soon popping up online.

The video has since gone viral on YouTube, as hundreds of thousands of people tune in to watch the 77-year-old's mistake.

"If each one of us does not amass riches only for oneself, but half for the service of others, in this f*** [pause], in this case the providence of God will become visible through this gesture of solidarity," the Argentinian reportedly told followers gathered in St Peter's Square.
