But one father has decided to adopt a more inventive approach when giving driving lessons.
Anton Avdeyev enjoys taking his five-year-old son Timofey for high-speed spins in their home of Kazakhstan.
The young dad has become a YouTube star after sharing footage of his drifting stunts - a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers.
In the latest video uploaded to his YouTube channel this month, he skillfully drives a Toyota JZ86 Gorilla Tru around Kazakhstan's Mobilex racetrack.
Timofey can be seen screaming and contorting his face as his father takes him on the ride of his life.
The video had been watched more than 250,000 times by this evening.
One YouTube commenter said: "Love it. Dad of the year!!!"
Another wrote: "The school run, done properly."
