Police are investigating whether a young Indian woman was burnt alive on her own funeral pyre after doctors declared she was dead.

Rachna Sisodia, 21, was pulled from the flames after family members arrived and insisted she was still alive.

Her family are now accusing her husband and his relatives of raping and murdering her.

The student had previously been declared dead from a lung infection on Sunday at a hospital in Noida near Delhi.

Her husband Devesh Chaudhary, 23, took the body for cremation the following day.

However, police claimed the woman had died during the funeral due to “shock caused by being burnt alive”, the Hindustan Times reported.

A post-mortem examination found ash in her windpipe and lungs, apparently showing she had been alive when she was put on the pyre.

One hospital official told the paper: "This happens when someone is burnt alive.

"The particles go inside with the breath. If a person is dead, such particles cannot reach the lungs and the windpipe.”

Mr Chaudhary, who is now being hunted by police, insisted he was innocent.
