A woman claims spilt Starbucks tea left her permanently disfigured and killed her dog because it was so dangerously hot.

Deanna Salas-Solano, 58, has filed a lawsuit suing the coffee chain for $75,000 (£55,000) after the large drink she ordered from a drive-through branch in Denver was served without a sleeve and with an unsecured lid.

She says it then melted her clothes and burnt her stomach when it spilt, with her screams of pain prompting her dog to jump into her lap, sending the tea all over him too.

Despite emergency veterinary treatment, the dog died a short time later from the injuries, papers claim, while Ms Salas-Solano underwent treatment for second-degree burns.

Starbucks denied the allegations relating to the September 2015 incident. A spokesman told the Washington Post: “I think it goes without saying we're certainly sympathetic to Ms Salas-Solano and the injuries she sustained, and my heart goes out to her for the loss of her dog.

"Having said that, we have video evidence that clearly contradicts the claims by her and actually believe they're without merit."
