A woman’s limbless body has been found in a gruesome discovery in a Brooklyn park in New York.

Police said the head and torso of the unidentified woman were found in Canarsie State Park near East 85th Street and Seaview Avenue at 6.20pm on Monday.

According to Channel 4 New York, a woman walking her dog found the body and alerted the police.

Detectives investigating said the body was located 15 feet away from the pedestrianised path.

It was found discarded in foliage covered by some leaves and branches with its arms and legs chopped off.

Community activist Tony Herbert told Channel 4 New York that he thinks the body must have been dumped there recently, adding that "it's a very active park."

Officers were unable to locate the missing limbs and are currently investigating the incident further.
