Pink ribbons are appearing on homes across Machynlleth in a heartfelt show of solidarity for missing April Jones.

Residents in the Mid Wales market town responded quickly to an appeal from the five-year-old's mother to "wear a pink ribbon for April".

Coral Jones broke down on Wednesday as she made a heart-wrenching appeal for any information which could help locate her daughter.

The urgency of her plea was driven home as it was revealed that April suffers from cerebral palsy and is in need of medication.

On Thursday Mrs Jones called on the public to wear pink, April's favourite colour, as a material sign that nobody has given up hope.

Among the pink ribbons which quickly appeared across Machynlleth was one on the gate of April's home on the Bryn-y-Gog estate.

April's godmother, Mair Raftree, triggered the show of solidarity when she revealed the family's wishes.

"What Coral has asked everybody to do is, if they can, either put one on front doors, gates, or to wear a pink ribbon, because, obviously, that's a favourite colour for April," she said, in a TV appeal.

Residents were quick to respond and pink ribbons began appearing on door knockers and windows across the town.

Cathy Jenkins, who was shopping in the town, said: "People are willing to do whatever is necessary. Everybody is so anguished at not being able to do anything. We are all waiting for news and being asked to do even this small thing comes as something of a relief."
