Amla and Kallis add to England woes

Hashim Amla became the first South African to make a double-hundred at The Oval as he and Jacques Kallis piled on England's misery in the first Investec Test.

Amla (251no) passed 200 for just the second time in his Test career, and Kallis duly completed the 43rd hundred of his, in a lunchtime total of 514 for two - and lead of 129 - on day four.

Their stand, following the 259 Amla put on with his captain Graeme Smith for the second wicket, was worth 254 - and once again, on a slow pitch yet to show significant signs of wear, there was no hiding place for the home bowlers.

By the end of another wicketless session, the consequence of their toils was to be part of an England attack taken for more than 500 runs for the first time in three years.

Amla was approaching his 11th hour at the crease by the time he poked a cover drive for three off Stuart Broad to bring up his double-century, containing 23 fours, from 392 balls.

He was still not done, though, and accompanied Kallis (125no) into three figures too as England's fruitless labours continued under a mocking sun.

The nearest they came to a breakthrough was when Amla pushed a sharp single into the off-side, and Ian Bell threw the stumps down - but Kallis, on 94, was safely home.

Soon afterwards, he reached his hundred - with a controlled edge wide of slip off Tim Bresnan for his 13th four from 227 balls.

South Africa therefore had three centurions in their innings - as did England's bowlers, Broad on 95 runs conceded lagging behind James Anderson, Bresnan and Graeme Swann.

They still had just two wickets between them too, of course - and Andrew Strauss resorted to employing Ravi Bopara bowling his medium-pace feet outside the off-stump, with four boundary sweepers, even with the third new ball available.
