Dozens held over derby game trouble

A total of 29 football fans have now been arrested after violence erupted following a derby match in Newcastle.

Three police officers were also injured during clashes with Newcastle fans after their side's 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at St James' Park.

Amid sporadic violence across the city centre, missiles were thrown at officers as the fans tried to confront Black Cats supporters at Central Station, Newcastle.

Video footage of the violence showed fans picking up empty glass bottles and throwing them towards the police as well as a burning bin lying on its side in the road.

Pictures and video also emerged of a man trying to punch a police horse before he was hauled to the ground by officers.

The West Yorkshire Police Horses Twitter account have tweeted a picture of the horse in question, called Bud, saying he is safe and well and appears fine.

The picture showed Bud in his paddock on Monday morning and thanked people for their concern. They also tweeted that all other horses returned safe and well.

On Sunday Chief Superintendent Steve Neill, of Northumbria Police, said: "The vast majority of fans were well behaved and enjoyed the Tyne-Wear derby for the great occasion that it is.

"Disappointingly, there was some disorder involving what appear to be Newcastle United supporters following the match in the city centre, including an incident at Central Station.

"Disruptive behaviour of any kind is not tolerated. Inquiries will take place into these incidents and action will be taken against all those involved."
