Khan set for Alexander showdown

Amir Khan is set to challenge Devon Alexander for the IBF welterweight world title in either New York or Dubai on December 7.

Press Association Sport understands the fight is agreed in principle with only the location still to be decided.

Khan, 26, is eager to fight in the Middle East for the first time as soon as possible but it is thought American champion Alexander is less keen.

Dubai may also be the more financially lucrative option but promoters Golden Boy have established a stronghold in New York having staged several big shows at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

The fight would be Khan's chance to regain a world title after a miserable couple of years which saw him lose his championship belts in defeats by Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

However, victory over the tricky Alexander would see the Bolton fighter become a two-weight world champion and perhaps resurrect his hopes of taking on pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.

He has been rebuilding from the Peterson and Garcia losses with victories over Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz in his last two fights. But those bouts put him back to winning ways without earning him any plaudits and did little to convince those who still question the Briton's punch resistance.

Alexander, 25-1 (14KOs) is not a concussive puncher and is regarded as an ideal opponent for the quick, slick Khan (28-3, 19KOs).

The fight is expected to be officially rubber-stamped in the coming days.
