Graham Onions had a hand in all 10 Nottinghamshire wickets to give Durham's survival hopes a major boost in their LV= County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge.

Onions, released from England's third Test squad, drove up from London to take the new ball for the visitors and finished with career-best bowling figures of nine for 67.

The 29-year-old could have even had the first 10-wicket innings haul in English cricket since Ottis Gibson achieved the feat in 2007, but he ran out number 10 batsman Luke Fletcher with a direct hit from backward square leg for the ninth dismissal.

Onions' stunning display left Nottinghamshire all out for 154, Paul Franks making 53, after Durham had earlier been bowled out for 194. Durham closed the day on 23 without loss in their second innings.

Surrey also enjoyed a good day in their bid to avoid the drop after a brave fightback on the second day against Middlesex.

Former India spinner Murali Kartik's five-wicket haul led their charge and minimised the damage after Middlesex began the day 99 for one in response to 144.

Kartik ripped through the middle order, with Middlesex at one stage losing four wickets for two runs on their way to being bowled out for 232.

Surrey then lost opener Zafar Ansari for a duck but Rory Burns, 40 not out, and Arun Harinath, unbeaten on 39, batted through a stumps score of 86 for one - good enough to trail by just two runs.

Lancashire's bid to draw away from the bottom two at bottom-placed Worcestershire was undermined by the home side's rookies Neil Pinner and Joe Leach, who made 79 not out and 46 respectively.

The duo, playing just their second four-day games, put on 111 for the sixth wicket as the Pears reached 219 for six against the faltering champions.
