Sharapova breezes past Morita

Maria Sharapova continued to breeze through the French Open draw as she dismantled Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-1 in their delayed second-round match.

The second seed and title favourite was held up on Thursday by the latest John Isner marathon, but wasted little time making up for it, needing only an hour to see off her Japanese opponent.

Sharapova is looking to complete a career grand slam at Roland Garros after reaching the semi-finals 12 months ago, and few would bet against her in this form.

At 5ft 5in, Morita is nine inches shorter than the Russian, and Sharapova's extra reach and power were simply too much. Morita competed gamely and at least got on the board in both sets, but that was as good as it got.

In the third round Sharapova will play Chinese 28th seed Peng Shuai, a player she has beaten in three of their four meetings, including in the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.
