Britney Spears was finally reunited with her sons yesterday after more than seven weeks apart.

The troubled singer has had no contact with 17-month-old Jayden James and Sean Preston, two, since a visit on January 3 when she refused to hand them back to ex-husband Kevin Federline who had been given primary custody in October.

The star had been denied visitation rights after erratic behaviour and reports of drug abuse.

Celebration: Britney went out for dinner on Saturday night at Beverly Hills' Mastros steakhouse. Earlier that day she had been reunited with her sons

After weeks of separation, Spears was ecstatic when Federline's bodyguard drove the two boys over to her Los Angeles home on Saturday morning.

The singer held a celebratory dinner at Maestro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills where she spent the evening with her father Jamie.

But she had to have a police escort her to her car to get through the media circus outside the restaurant.

Sources told America's People magazine that Spears' father and a psychiatrist were present during the monitored visit.

Britney's hair continues to leave critics unimpressed

Following two spells in a psychiatric unit and renewed involvement in her life by her father Jamie, the 26-year-old has been making progress, say sources in Los Angeles.

However, while she may be sorting her life out, it seems poor Britney's hair may never recover from being shorn off and replaced by tacky extensions.

Wrapped in a loose bun on the top of her head, the multi-coloured mop looked worse wear and in need of a good deep-conditioning.

Long gone are the days when the singer's golden mane was the envy of teenage pop fans and grown women alike.

Since the infamous shaving, caught on camera by the world's media, Britney has sported long brown matted extensions.

She previously alternated these with a pink bobbed wig, however, her father, in a smart move, confiscated this when he took over control of her affairs.

This is not the only improvement Jamie Spears has been credited for. Elliot Mintz, a spokesman for Federline, hailed him for helping to reunite his daughter with her sons.

Mintz said: "James Spears went a long way in terms of stabilising an environment that surrounded Britney which was wildly in flux.

"It's clear Britney is in a different place now than she was a week or two ago."

Spears' father Jamie remains in charge of her estate after he was named co-conservator following her second hospitalisation.

Last week, lawyers finally served Spears' former "manager" Sam Lutfi with a restraining order to stay away from the singer and her family after unsuccessful prior attempts to track him down.

In an affidavit, Spears' parents claim Lutfi drugged the singer and cut off her phone lines.

Lutfi has vehemently denied the claims.
