Hip-hop star 50 Cent has revealed that filing for bankruptcy was a “strategic business move”.

The rapper – real name Curtis Jackson – filed for bankruptcy just days after being ordered to pay $5 million in a law suit.

It came after a jury ordered the star to pay the sum of money to Lastonia Leviston, whose sex tape he allegedly 'leaked' and posted online without her permission to embarrass his rap rival Rick Ross.

Speaking at a press conference for his new film Southpaw - which sees him play a manipulative boxing promoter - he said that his fans will not be affected as a result.

"They won’t see any adjustments," he told Reuters. "There’ll be the same energy. I don’t expect a lot of people to understand a strategic business move.

"I’m clear on my target and I’m not going to allow myself to just fall apart based on little things."

His comments come hours after he appeared to make light of the situation on Instagram where he joked that “times are hard”.

Alongside a picture of himself next to a blue smart car he wrote: “Times are hard out here LMAO#EFFENVODKA #FRIGO #SMSAUDIO.”
