Amanda Holden cried tears of joy as she told how her friend who was born with Cystic Fibrosis has given birth to a healthy baby boy.

Speaking with co-presenter Jamie Theakston on Heart Breakfast, the radio host said that she wanted to give “a massive congratulations and shout out to a very close friend,” before warning listeners that she “might actually start crying.”

She explained who her “lovely friend” Mary has a 27-year-old daughter named Caroline who was born with the genetic condition, which causes mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system.

Holden said that Caroline’s parents have “never ever let” the condition “hold her back” and revealed that she married “the love of her life” a “couple of years ago.”

“On Friday, she safely, thank goodness, gave birth to a little boy,” she told listeners.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge’s voice faltered with emotion as she told her co-host: “Sorry, it just really wells me up.”

“The fact that she’s got on with Cystic Fibrosis her whole life and now had a baby, who I’m sure we’re going to find out today is going to be clear of that illness, i just wanted to say that there is hope out there for anybody suffering from anything,” she said.

“If you’re told you can’t do something, don’t listen, keep going on. It’s such a lovely story.”

Cystic Fibrosis is thought to affect more than 10,400 people in the UK and can cause lung infections and problems with digestion. Newborns are screened for the condition using a heel prick test.

Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden airs weekdays from 6.30am to 10am.
