US actress Amy Schumer shut down an interviewer after he appeared to imply that her character in Trainwreck is "skanky".

Schumer was on Melbourne's KIIS 101.1 radio to promote the new film which sees Schumer play monogamy-averse Amy Townsend.

The actress explained that the film is autobiographical telling Matt Tilley and Jane Hall that "there's a lot of me in this movie".

"I would say it was me 10 years ago when I was a sophomore in college," she said. "I was in a lot of pain and I was spreading myself too thin and I was drinking a lot and I just realised just how destructive it was."

Tilley then asked: "Do you have the word skanky in America?"

Clearly unsettled by the question, Schumer quipped: "We do have that word. What made you think about your mum? Why did she just pop into your mind?"

Matt began to explain that he wasn't trying to offend her to which Schumer replied: "Whatever you're trying to do, you are. That's a rude question."

The radio DJ then tried to redeem himself and attempted to summarise the film's plot. But after explaining to Schumer what he thought it was about, she replied simply: "No."

Hall then joked "I might come by myself next time," to which Schumer replied: "I love that idea!"
