BAFTA-winning actress Brenda Blethyn has spoken of the importance of “wholesome entertaining” television shows for children, which can teach important life lessons.

Blethyn, 68, the star of ITV’s detective series Vera, said she had “great fun” recently recording the voice of Ernestine Enormomonster in Disney Junior’s show Henry Hugglemonster.

She added: “The Hugglemonsters seem such a wonderful invention, just so colourful and silly and bizarre.

“I think it is essential there should be good wholesome entertaining programmes for children, particular pre-school children.

“This teaches everyday lessons for just how to behave with friends and family and how to share and how to hold your temper. The more pre-school children are on the right track the better it is going to be for everyone.” Blethyn said she suspected TV bosses had initially been “surprised” by the popularity of Vera.

She said that she loved shooting it for five months of the year in Northumberland, but added: “I’d quite like some time off.”

The new series of Henry Huggle-monster, based on the books of Niamh Sharkey, is on Disney Junior now.
