A beauty company has apologised after confusing Whoopi Goldberg for Oprah Winfrey at the Oscars.

US based website Total Beauty tweeted a picture of Goldberg on the red carpet, but accidentally tagged Winfrey.

Alongside a picture of Goldberg in a black dress the caption read: “We had no idea @Oprah was #tatted, and we love it. #Oscars.”

The tweet has since been deleted.

The post sparked outrage among some users who branded the post racist.

One posted: “Are you f***ing kidding me?!? The ONE black woman at the #Oscars and you f*** it up.”

Another mocked the account, tweeting: “Hey @TotalBeauty, we don't all look the same. Just sayin... (sic)"

Quickly realising the mistake the tweet was deleted and and apology was posted: “We’d like to apologise to Oprah and Whoopi, as well as everyone we’ve offended. It was our error, and there are no excuses. We’re sorry.”

The company later revealed that they will donate $10,000 to a charity of Goldberg and Winfrey’s choice: "Using this #Oscars #SNAFU as an opportunity to donate $10k to @whoopigoldberg & @oprah's charity of choice. #ThatsNotOprah #WeMeanIt."
