Ed Sheeran has admitted that he stayed inside his house for four months as he struggled to cope with his rising fame.

The British singer-songwriter couldn’t even “go out to get a pint of milk” as he felt too overwhelmed by his sudden success.

Sheeran, who has just released brand new album Divide, says he gained weight as he lived off takeaways in his London flat.

“I stayed inside for four months. I just ordered food in and watched movies. I couldn’t go out and get a pint of milk. I always wanted to maintain normality - being able to go to the pub or go do a gig,” he told The Sun.

“I just stopped going out - instead I was ordering takeaways and putting on a lot of weight. I hadn’t got any balance so I just stayed inside.”

After making a name for himself on both sides of the Atlantic with his debut album +, Sheeran decided to take a year off.

At the end of 2015 the singer shocked fans by announcing that he would be taking time away from the music scene to focus on himself.

“I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed,” he said at the time.

Sheeran made his comeback at the beginning of 2017, shooting straight back up the charts with new releases Shape of You and Castle on the Hill.
