Gary Lineker has mocked David Cameron following his resignation as MP.

The former Prime Minister quit his seat as MP for Witney in Oxfordshire on Monday afternoon – and Lineker couldn’t resist poking fun.

The Match of the Day presenter referenced the time Cameron appeared to forget which football team he supports as he marked the politician’s resignation on Twitter.

Lineker tweeted: “David Cameron is resigning as an MP to spend more time watching his favourite football team, West Ham....sorry Aston Villa.”

Cameron was mocked last year when he encouraged people to support West Ham – despite previously claiming to be an Aston Villa fan.

He made the gaffe during a speech in the run up to the general election and later blamed the slip up on “brain fade”.

In a speech on increasing opportunities for ethnic minority Britons, Cameron said: “We are a shining example of a country where multiple identities work.

“A country where you can be Welsh and Hindu and British, Northern Irish and Jewish and British, where you can wear a kilt and a turban, where you can wear a hijab covered in poppies. Where you can support Man Utd, the Windies and Team GB all at the same time.

“Of course, I’d rather you supported West Ham.”

Brian Moore accused him of fabricating his love of Aston Villa while Piers Morgan branded his apparent slip-up as “unforgivable”.
