Highly Suspect look on bright side of Donald Trump’s victory

American rock band Highly Suspect say Donald Trump represents “all the things that we stand against” but also predict that his election could inspire a wave of great new music.

The trio — singer Johnny Stevens and twins Rich and Ryan Meyer — have won fans for their lyrics, which feature pro-equality messages. Debut single Lydia was nominated for a Grammy last year and their latest, My Name Is Human, has been nominated for another at next year’s ceremony.

Stevens said: “Music in general is hitting a good point. I think any time that the world is in turmoil, good art comes from it. Most of the country didn’t vote for Donald Trump.

“Not only it is embarrassing for America, it’s also very sad. You guys just voted for Brexit and I had friends in the UK saying, ‘God help it doesn’t happen to you’, but it did!

“We have a person who is openly misogynistic, racist and homophobic — literally all the things that we stand against.”

Stevens, below centre with bandmates Rich. left, and Ryan Meyer added: “We do put a crosshair on our heads with our lyrics, I feel it. But I also feel strongly about our message. As a white, straight male, there is nobody of that ilk outspoken against Trump.”

Highly Suspect return to the UK in March to headline at Koko in Camden.
