'I'll be wearing it at breakfast': Ringo Starr finally receives his knighthood for services to music

Ringo Starr vowed to “wear his medal at breakfast” after he received his knighthood at Buckingham Palace.

The legendary Beatles drummer knelt before Prince William on Tuesday to receive his honour, which he later said “meant a lot”.

The musician told the BBC: “It means a lot actually. It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this.

“I'll be wearing it at breakfast,” he added jokingly.

But asked if he’ll want to be called Sir Ringo, he replied: “I don't know yet. It's new and I don't know how you use it properly,” before joking that the reporter could try it out.

He officially received the honour under his real name of Richard Starkey.

The honour comes 53 years after musical sensations The Beatles were all given MBEs and Sir Richard admitted that he missed the companionship on a day like today.

The 77-year-old told the broadcaster: “I was a bit shaky today on my own.”

Sir Richard attended the ceremony at Buckingham Palace with his wife Barbara Bach, whom he married in 1981.

The acclaimed drummer – famous for his peace sign pose – rose to fame with the iconic Liverpudlian band alongside Sir Paul McCartney and the late John Lennon and George Harrison.

Sir Paul was knighted some 21 years ago, with Sir Tim Rice saying that Starr’s honour had been “long overdue”.

Sir Richard was among several celebrities to receive investitures today, with a list including authors Michael Morpurgo and Jilly Cooper, with the former knighted and the latter awarded a CBE.
