Selma Blair found herself in hot water after she claimed that friend Cameron Diaz has retired from acting.

The 45-year-old – who starred alongside Diaz in The Sweetest Thing – told reporters that Diaz is keen to spend more time with her husband Benji Madden.

She has since retracted her claim, telling her Twitter followers that she was simply “making a joke”.

She posted: “BREAKING NEWS. Guys please, I was making a joke in an interview. CAMERON DIAZ is NOT retiring from ANYTHING. And for more breaking news: I am NOW retiring from being Cameron Diaz’s spokesperson.”

The tweet came hours after she told reporters she would want to make a sequel to The Sweetest Thing, but that Diaz has turned her back on acting.

She said: “I had lunch with Cameron the other day. We were reminiscing about the film.

“I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron's retired from acting. She’s like ‘I’m done’.”

She continued: “I mean, she doesn't need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life, I don't know what it would take to bring her back.”

Diaz’s last role was as Miss Hannigan in the 2014 remake of classic film Annie. She has also enjoyed roles in There’s Something About Mary, The Holiday and lent her voice to Princess Fiona in hit animated comedy Shrek.

Diaz tied the knot with musician Madden in 2015 less than a year after they started dating.

The intimate ceremony was held at their Beverley Hills home.
