US actor Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that marriage scares him.

Gyllenhaal, 34, opened up about being in love and wanting to get married during an appearance on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show.

When asked if he wants to get married the Southpaw actor replied: “Oh I hope so.”

Stern then questioned whether marriage was realistic in an environment where he is surrounded by beautiful women, to which he replied: “I think at some point you just decide to grow up. There are a lot of beautiful women and there are opportunities, but I think at the same time you find the right person.

“I believe in monogamy. I believe that when you meet the right person it will be right.”

Gyllenhaal – who has dated a string of A-listers including Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon – confessed that he has been in love “three times, twice maybe” but that they never resulted in a marriage as he was too “scared”.

“Me held me back,” he said. “I think I probably just got scared.”

Stern then joked that he should have married Swift – who he dated in 2011 – as the pair would have been the next power couple.

“I feel – and this is me stepping in – you should have married Taylor Swift, and I'll tell you why…What a power couple!” Stern said.

But the actor – who is currently single – said he wants to have the “cool” relationship that his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal has with her husband Peter Sarsgaard.

Speaking about the couple – who have two children together, Ramona and Gloria – he said: “I admire that relationship. They’re definitely a standard for me.

“Making a relationship that’s cool and you have kids and it feels cool and you’re psyched to be a dad – my sister and her husband make it feel that way.”
