Norah Jones has told how she found inspiration for her new album during night feeds with her baby.

The jazz singer, 37, who shot to fame with her 2002 smash-hit debut Come Away With Me — which won five Grammys — returns to her original sound with Day Breaks.

She recently gave birth to her second son, although she has kept details about her two children and the identity of their father a secret.

She told the Standard: “When I was up in the middle of the night, I was in a different place. It was 2am, I was delirious, thinking about music and was getting excited about doing something else.

"Sometimes I would sing to my son… Sometimes I would just hum him a bassline in my head while feeding him.”

Jones has not stayed at the heady heights of her early fame, when her first album sold 26 million copies worldwide, but says she has “made my peace with that period in my life”.

She added: “If that all never happens to me again I will be happy. I’ve still had a great career and I’m still making music that I’m excited about.

"I had crazy success early on… and I know that I’m happier not being insanely successful… I can go out with my kids, visit the grocery store.”

Day Breaks is released on October 7. Norah Jones plays the London Palladium on November 14.
