Jeremy Clarkson was today accused of homophobia after he used a derogatory term while joking about finding a job following his sacking from the BBC.

Clarkson, 55, tweeted a picture of himself posing alongside Richard Hammond outside the Margaret River Fudge Factory in Australia and made a reference to the derogatory term ‘fudge packer’.

He captioned the image: “We have got jobs at last. Here. As packers.”

Hammond also tweeted the picture alongside the caption: “Finally, work. We start today as packers.”

A spokesman for gay rights charity Stonewall told the Mail Online: “We can’t quite see Clarkson in the confectionery industry, maybe it’s the sour taste that his racist and homophobic slurs leave. All we can see him packing up at the moment is his career.”

Twitter users were also quick to voice their disapproval, with one writing: “Continuing with the casual homophobia, @JeremyClarkson, I see. Not into life-long learning?”

Another wrote: “@JeremyClarkson And.. you're fired again.”

One user told him to “Stop with the homophobic comments”.

The pair are currently in Australia with James May as part of the Clarkson, Hammond and May Live Tour.

During their 90 minute show in Perth on Saturday Clarkson appeared to confirm that the trio are working on a US rival to Top Gear.

Speaking to a 15,000 strong crowd Clarkson said: “Amazingly, there had been a lot of interest in us doing a car show for television.

“Who knows, very soon once more you will be seeing us on a television or an internet near where you live.”

The car enthusiast later mocked Hammond for pronouncing the letter 'Z' in a US accent and quipped: “You're not in America.”

Hammond replied: “Not yet.”
