A petition has been launched calling for Zara Holland to be given back her Miss Great Britain title.

Holland, 20, was de-crowned after she had sex with a fellow contestant on ITV reality show Love Island.

The Miss Great Britain organisation took the decision to strip her of her title after arguing that it could no longer "promote Zara as a positive role model" because she had failed to "uphold the responsibility expected of the title".

A Change.org petition titled “Give Zara Holland her Miss GB Title Back” has amassed 12,000 signatures and described Holland’s treatment as a “harsh punishment”.

“I think it is a harsh punishment stripping her of her title for a silly little mistake and for only being human,” the petition reads. “I am aware that having a title like that comes with responsibilities and I for one think she has been absolutely amazing.

“She has shown she is a strong positive person, we have to remember she is still a young lady and what happened was only natural.

"I think she should be given a second chance as Miss Great Britain!”

Stars including Anthea Turner have thrown their support behind the petition.

Love Island host Caroline Flack hit out at the decision to strip Holland of her title and accused the organisation of living in the “dark ages”.

Holland has since quit the reality TV show after her mother was taken ill.

Addressing her title strip she told fellow contestants: "I feel like I’m in a good place and what happened happened and I’ve moved on. And I just wanted to show everyone who I am, and nothing’s changed me."
