Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is outpacing the original Mamma Mia! at the UK box office, according to new figures.

Figures show that the film – which was released on July 20 - has taken an impressive £39.3 million after its first three weekends on the big screen.

This is almost £15million more than the amount made by the decade-old Mamma Mia! during the equivalent period in 2008.

Despite competition from blockbusters Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Incredibles 2, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is shaping up to be one of the biggest films of the summer.

If the impressive stature continues, the film – which stars Lily James and Amanda Seyfried – could go on to become one of the most successful movies of the year.

The original Mamma Mia! made £24.6million in the UK over its first three weekends in 2008, according to figures from the British Film Institute.

It went on to take an enormous £77.8million (adjusted for inflation), enough to put it in the top 15 all-time biggest films in the UK.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again repeats the same formula as the original: a feel-good plot packed with Abba songs performed with gusto by huge stars – something the box office figures suggest has been welcomed.

But the sequels main change was the introduction of Downton Abbey actress James who plays a younger version of Meryl Streep’s Donna, detailing her three romances from the first film.

There are also more ABBA hits in the second film including When I Kissed The Teacher and Fernando, the latter performed by Cher who appears as Sophie’s grandma.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is in cinemas now.
