Marion Cotillard has admitted filming a sex scene with Brad Pitt for their new film, Allied, was “awkward”.

The French actress – who plays Pitt’s love interest in the Robert Zemeckis directed film – said they tried to laugh about the steamy scene in an attempt to dispel the ‘weirdness’.

Speaking at a press conference she said: "We rehearse and had a very determined choreography, and then it allows you freedom.

"When you know exactly what your body will do, then you can act and you can be free to give the emotions and give the feelings because you won’t think, ‘What am I going to do next? Am I going to go on top of him?’ It’s an awkward situation.”

She continued: “We laughed because you need to get it out because this is so weird. And so you get this time of looking at each other and saying, ‘OK, this is so weird.’

“And then we go into this and then I’m going on top of you and then we are going to kiss.”

Cotillard also revealed she tried to teach Pitt her native tongue as his character Max Vatan speaks some French in the film.

“He had this commitment to do the best he could, which was really, really impressive, so I helped him by being very tough,” she said.

“I was very honest with him. But at the same time, I really wanted to support him in this process that I went through, and I know how hard it is.”

Cotillard’s comments come a month after she found herself at the centre of speculation amid reports she had become close to Pitt during the filming of the WWII drama.

She quickly hit back at the reports on Instagram where she declared her love for her partner of eight years Guillaume Canet and confirmed he is the father of her unborn child.

Canet – who also has five-year-old son Marcel with Cotillard – blasted the "venal stupidity" of those who accused his partner of having an affair.

Allied is set for UK cinema release on November 25.
