Amy Winehouse's father says he still misses his daughter “dearly, every day” on what would have been the singer’s 34th birthday.

Mitch Winehouse said the family felt “particularly emotional” at this time of year, following the star’s death from alcohol poisoning in July 2011.

He said: “She is my daughter and we miss her dearly, greatly, every day. That will never go away. But then we always remember the wonderful girl she was and the wonderful memories we have with her.”

Mr Winehouse established the Amy Winehouse Foundation shortly after her death. It runs projects to help disadvantaged young people across London, as well as talks and workshops for teenagers about drug and alcohol abuse.

Mr Winehouse said: “It brings me a lot of joy, these projects, especially around a very difficult time. We do everything we can as a family to do something good in her name.”

He said he believed Amy would have been proud of his work, adding: “I believe in life after death. I have a lot of evidence that Amy is still close to me.

"Trust me, if she wasn’t happy with what we were doing there would be a big thunderclap and a big crater in the ground where I am supposed to be.”

Mr Winehouse was speaking ahead of a new London Live documentary about Amy’s Yard, a 12-week programme for aspiring young musicians, held at the singer’s former London studio.

The film features interviews with Mr Winehouse and the singer’s mother Janis. Its broadcast also marks the sixth anniversary of the creation of the foundation, which is hosting its annual fundraising gala on October 5 at The Dorchester hotel.
