There was no stopping One Direction as the British boy band scooped three top prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The baby-faced X Factor stars beat Justin Bieber and Rihanna last night to be the big winners and crown their arrival on the American pop scene.

They won for best pop video and overshadowed fellow Britons The Wanted as best new artists, collecting two MTV Moonman trophies, while in the most share-worthy video category, voted for by fans on Twitter, they won with  their debut single What Makes You Beautiful, with more than 27 million tweets.

The band seemed stunned, despite this year becoming the first British act to top the American album charts with their debut, Up All Night.

After performing their hit One Thing to hordes of screaming girls, Niall Horan, 18, said: "We've grown up watching this show and to even be here is an honour."Bandmate Harry Styles, 20, added: "To win one Moonman is amazing, to win two is incredible." Even pop star Katy Perry seemed entranced by Simon Cowell's latest hit makers, kissing each of them after announcing their first win.

Other highlights of the show included country-pop artist Taylor Swift singing her hit  We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, and Rihanna wowed the crowds with a new cropped hairstyle and full-length white dress. Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, 22, made an appearance with Ezra Miller, her co-star in her new film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Watson sported a colour-blocked and patterned mini-dress by London Fashion Week design duo Peter Pilotto.

London-born Robert Pattinson, star of the Twilight vampire films, introduced a clip from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2,  and US Olympic gymnastics champion Gabby Ross, 16, back-flipped across the stage.

Rihanna, who with Canadian rapper Drake was most-nominated with five nods, came away with only one Moonman, but it was video of the year - the most coveted award of the night - for her single We Found Love.

Drake also came away with just one win, for his hip-hop video HYFR, which celebrates his Jewish heritage.

In a hip-hop-heavy show, rapper Nicki Minaj won best female video for Starships, while Chris Brown won best male video and best choreography for Turn Up the Music.
