Raven-Symoné faced a huge online backlash after revealing that she does not believe Harriet Tubman should be placed on a $20 note, claiming that she is not ‘progressive’ enough.

The 29-year-old actress made the comment while guest-hosting US talk show, The View.

Symone – who found fame on Disney’s That’s So Raven – disagreed with the outcome of an online poll which saw Tubman come top out of a list of potential female replacements for former President Andrew Jackson.

"No offense to everyone that's going to be mad at me for saying this, I don't like that idea," she said of the abolitionist featuring on the note.

"I think we need to move a little bit more forward. Let me just preface that I understand the history, I get it, trust me, I was taught, I'm in that culture. There’s also Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt. I personally would’ve chosen Rosa Parks.”

When asked why she did not agree, Symone continued: “I would’ve chosen someone who is closer to the progression that we’re doing now, and I know you have to understand history so you don’t repeat it, but that doesn’t really happen in our world because we still repeat history of hating other cultures over and over again.”

Symone was soon trending on Twitter as viewers hit back at her comments. One user branded her “ignorant”, tweeting: “Harriet Tubman helped slaves find freedom & was a Black Feminist leader. Raven Symone, DEFINE progressive. You're ignorant @MissRavenSymone."

Another wrote: “Raven Symone doesn’t find Harriet Tubman progressive enough to be on our $20 bill. Same Raven who said she’s from every continent in Africa.”

Earlier today Hilary Clinton threw her support behind Tubman appearing on the note, tweeting that it would be "awesome".
