Ray Davies has laughed off any “romantic” notions of a Kinks reunion as the West End show based on his songs extends its hit run.

The band, centred around the often difficult relationship between Ray, 71, and his brother Dave, 69, sold millions of records over more than 30 years. The Kinks split up in 1996.

Sunny Afternoon, created by singer and playwright Joe Penhall, has brought the band a new generation of fans.

Hopes that they would get back together were boosted at Christmas when Ray briefly joined his brother on stage during a gig at Islington Assembly Hall.

Davies said: “I’m still trying to live that down. I joined him on stage briefly but it would be overly romantic to think it was because of the show or to start talking about a reunion.”

He is working on an album, due out next year, and is also writing a book which he said was “a sort of prequel” to his autobiography X-Ray.

He added: “I’m interested in community and it’s about that and about London. I’m not a political person but I do think we have lost some sense of community. I like working with true stories and elaborating on them.”

The show has extended its West End run to October 29 — taking it past the two-year mark. “You don’t have to be a Kinks fan to enjoy it, it is a universal story,” he said.

“I’m really proud and pleased for all the cast, I still go down when the cast changes or there is an understudy to see them perform.”
