The Red Hot Chili Peppers were asked to sign Metallica memorabilia after airport staff confused the two US bands.

Bassist Flea claimed his band was stopped by Belarus customs officials while touring in Europe.

He said the group were taken into a customs room and told to sign autographs – on Metallica merchandise.

Recalling the bizarre incident on Instagram, Flea wrote: “We were called into customs officials office at an airport in Belarus and they asked us to sign a bunch of Metallica cd's and photos. We tried to explain to them that we weren't Metallica but they insisted that we sign anyway. They had the power."

Flea joked that he could have been the reason for the confusion as he has played with the heavy metal band in the past.

“Well I did play fight fire with with with Metallica once," he wrote. "I love Metallica anyways but I'm no Robert Trujillo.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers closed Scotland’s T In The Park festival with their headline set on Sunday night following the release of their 11th studio album, The Getaway.

Their set was met with mixed reviews from fans with one tweeting: “Let's be honest the Red Hot Chili Peppers have only ever been a jalapeno.”

Another posted: “The Red Hot Chili Peppers have to be the highlight of the weekend (sic).”

The band will head to Canada and Asia before returning to the UK for Reading and Leeds Festivals.
