Scarlett Johansson: There is nothing strange, creepy or inappropriate about John Travolta

Scarlett Johansson has defended John Travolta's actions on the Oscars red carpet and has insisted that any greeting from the Grease actor is a "pleasure".

Travolta, 61, made headlines when he appeared to awkwardly embrace the Avengers actress before giving her a kiss on the cheek at the Oscars on Sunday night.

Johannson was pictured looking shocked by the encounter, which paved the way for a flurry of memes.

But the 30-year-old actress has now dismissed rumours that the situation was awkward.

In a statement to Associated Press on Thursday she said: "There is nothing at all strange, creepy or inappropriate about John Travolta.

The image that is circulating is an unfortunate still-frame from a live-action encounter that was very sweet and totally welcome.

"That still photo does not reflect what preceded and followed if you see the moment live.

"I haven't seen John in some years and it is always a pleasure to be greeted by him."

All eyes were back on the Pulp Fiction actor later in the evening when he took to the stage to present an award with Idina Menzel - whose name he mispronounced as Adele Dazeem at last year's ceremony.

The Let It Go singer jokingly introduced Travolta as Glom Gazingo before he proceeded to stroke her face, an act which his representative later confirmed was rehearsed.
