Simon Cowell has revealed that he would have “lied” and “pretended” to be happy if he knew that the X Factor’s Over 25 group were watching the categories being revealed to the judges.

The Over 25’s were left shocked after Cowell said “Oh for f***s sake”, on learning of his group and proceeded to ask Caroline Flack and Olly Murs to double check that it was correct.

When it was confirmed, he mouthed: “I’m so pi***d off.”

Speaking to Susanna Reid about the incident for Good Morning Britain, the head judge said: “I didn’t know they were watching it at the time I wasn’t aware. I watched it back and I thought, I should have realised they were watching at the time because I was obviously going to lie to them and say ‘I was really happy to get you’.”

Despite his obvious disappointment with his mentees, the father-of-one said they are “cool” with him now.

He continued: “Later that day we had a slightly awkward conversation, but they were absolutely cool and I got focused and it was fine.”

Cowell has yet to cut down his group in the Six Chair Challenge segment which fellow judge Rita Ora faced last week.

The Poison singer – who was assigned to mentor the Girls – looked close to having a panic attack as she chose six girls to take with her to Judges’ Houses.

The Boys will be looked after by Nick Grimshaw while Cheryl Fernandez-Versini will take the Groups.
