Simon Le Bon has admitted that Sam Smith’s Spectre theme song is not his ‘favourite’.

Speaking at this week’s Q Awards, the musician claimed that he preferred Duran Duran’s A View to Kill to Smith’s Writing’s On The Wall.

He told Gigwise: “I caught a little bit of [Smith's song], it's not my favourite – I prefer ours.

"But he's Sam Smith, he's got a beautiful voice and I'm a big fan of him. I support him and what he stands for."

The 56-year-old went on to say that a Bond theme needs ‘surprising’ and ‘exciting’ elements to make it work.

He said: “I always think it needs something exciting, something surprising, something that shocks you a little bit.

“Whether it's a chord change, a rhythmic shift or even a lyrical twist – a surprise is always a good thing.”

Spectre producer Barbara Broccoli obviously thinks that Smith’s song ticks all of the Bond boxes, recently describing it as one of the best Bond songs ‘in history’.

She said: “We couldn't have picked anybody better.

"The song matches the feeling and the tone of the movie. I think [Sam's version] will go down as being one of the greatest Bond songs in history."

Spectre is in UK cinemas on October 26.
