Steve Brookstein has caused a Twitter outrage after admitting that he was 'oblivious' to the 7/7 attacks because his album had just reached number one.

The former X Factor winner, who has been vocal about his contempt for the show, sent the 'insensitive' tweet on the morning of the tenth anniversary of the London bombings.

He wrote: "10 years ago I was heading home from New York and Barcelona after celebrating a No1 album. Totally oblivious to 7/7 attacks."

While the singer didn't seem to be trying to cause offence, many of his followers branded the post 'tactless' and 'insensitive'.

One person wrote: "On a scale of one to Piers Morgan i'd say Steve Brookstein has just surpassed Katie Hopkins and gone off the scale #SevenSeven."

Anther added: "Amazing that Steve Brookstein tweet. Takes some incredible twitter skill to use a terrorist attack to remind everyone of your album sales."

The 46-year-old, who has recently released his autobiography, quickly defended himself on the social networking site, simply saying that his was one of a 'where I was when' trend.

Replying to one follower he said: "Not a tribute. Just doing the "where was I" tweet. I've not done a tribute to those who died though it's extremely sad."

Responding to another who wrote "cool story bro", he said "nah it's crap. Three weeks later I'm trying to get out of a record deal and Max Clifford is threatening me. Shit happens."

Adding: "Not boasting. If you knew anything about me 2005 was a f***ing shit year."
