The Weeknd has urged his fans to support Captain Tom Moore’s single so that he can hit number one for his 100th birthday.

With the data for the Official Singles Chart delivered after midnight Thursday, Michael Ball and Captain Tom’s single You’ll Never Walk Alone is currently in competition with The Weeknd’s single Blinding Lights.

Taking to Twitter, The Weeknd urged fans to give Captain Tom’s song a final push.

“Everyone in the UK please support @captaintommoore / @mrmichaelball single so this incredible 99 yr old war veteran, walking for the British National Health Service @NHSuk & now raised $35 Million can have a No 1 for his 100th birthday in the UK!,” he wrote.

“We’re routing for you (sic)”.

Captain Tom’s charity single, which features Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care choir, is raising money for NHS charities after he already raised £28 million for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden.

The World War Two veteran turns 100 next week on April 30.

An update on Wednesday from the Official Charts Company revealed the gap was closing between the two singles, with You'll Never Walk Alone holding the lead with 60,000 chart sales this week, but with Blinding Lights just over 18,000 chart sales behind.

The Weeknd's single has been surging due to a TikTok dance challenge that has seen the likes of Nicole Scherzinger take part.

The figures revealed that Captain Tom is leading the way on downloads, but The Weeknd is dominating streaming figures.

The Official Singles Chart for this week will be revealed on Friday.
